August 2008 SkyeTec One of Only 30 Invited to Attend StormStruck Ribbon Cutting and First Viewing More than 300 gathered yesterday at EPCOT in the east Innoventions hall, for the Grand Opening of StormStruck. Insurance commissioners in attendance from four states, as well as a wired message from President Bush demonstrated that this ride reaches far beyond the average theme park ride. Of the 300 invited, only 30 were included in the Ribbon Cutting and First Viewing Ceremonies, and both SkyeTec’s President and CEO were among the selected few invited to attend. A project seven years in the making, StormStruck officially opened as a new attraction that emphasizes storm preparedness in an entertaining, interactive format. The 4-D hurricane simulation experience aims to prepare homeowners for storms—strengthening homes and saving lives—by providing a look at a hurricane from your living room window. Ted Nelson, President of SkyeTec, describes his experience in StormStruck as powerful, in many ways. “During the eye of the storm, you have the opportunity to test your knowledge of mitigation building techniques. Through a series of eight questions, a new structure is rebuilt and the storm strikes again. How well the new structure holds during the hurricane depends on the answers you provided to the previous eight questions. Thank goodness I know a lot about wind mitigation building techniques!” Nelson continues, “In all seriousness, with more than 50,000,000 visitors to the Orlando area each year, the opportunity to inform, educate and protect at risk citizens is tremendous.” During the opening ceremonies, FLASH CEO, Leslie Chapman Henderson, was handed a memo from President Bush congratulating and thanking FLASH® and its partners for their hard work in helping educate and protect the American public.
