Take Your Efficiency to New Heights

Here at SkyeTec, we want to help you achieve the highest level of efficiency in your home. Provided below are simple tips that you can use to further reduce your energy consumption. Lower your utility bills, increase your comfort, and reduce your footprint on the environment with just a few changes.

Energy Efficiency

Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).CFLs use 75% less energy and last ten times longer than standard bulbs.

Check door seals on refrigerator and freezers. Place a dollar bill in the door as you close – if it does not hold firmly, the seal is worn and needs to be replaced.

Insulate heating ducts in unheated areas such as attics and crawlspaces and keep them in good repair to prevent heat loss of up to 60 percent at the registers.

Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house.

Plug air leaks with caulking, sealing, or weather stripping to save 10 percent or more on your energy bill.

Turn your lights off when you leave a room. Standard, incandescent light bulbs should be turned off whenever they are not needed. Fluorescent lights should be turned off whenever you'll be away for 15 minutes or more.

Consider buying a laptop for your next computer upgrade; they use much less energy than desktop computers.

For older appliances, use a power controlling device to reduce the energy consumption of the appliance's electric motor.

Water Efficiency

Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.

Install aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads. Select a shower head with a flow rate of less than 2.5 gpm (gallons per minute) for maximum water efficiency.

Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips.

Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you

discover leaks.

Aerate your lawn at least once a year so water can reach the roots rather than run off the surface.

Indoor Air Quality

Install low chemical emitting furniture and finishes, and open windows when using paints, adhesives, sealants, and other materials that tend to give off gas during installation.

Turn on the exhaust fan when showering to limit moisture build up.

Clean and service your Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioner (HVAC) annually. Inspect your HVAC filter each month, changing every 3 months.

Use organic lawn care methods like mowing high and adding topsoil to reduce the risk of pesticide exposure.  To get rid of pests, remove food sources, use boric acid and traps.
