ENERGY STAR is a program developed by the EPA to help protect the environment through the use of
energy efficient practices and products. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC). Homeowners who purchase ENERGY STAR homes enjoy lower operating costs, healthier indoor environmental conditions, and a reduction of their impact on the environment.

The EPA has announced new, more rigorous guidelines for the new home ENERGY STAR program. Compared to the current ENERGY STAR guidelines, the new requirements will make qualified new homes at least 20 percent more efficient than homes built to the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
