SkyeTec Detects Chinese Drywall that Causes Smell, Damage to Homes

Drywall manufactured in China appears to be emitting corrosive air pollutants that are causing foul odors, AC component damages, and now, lawsuits from unhappy citizens whose homes have been built with this material. Installed in Florida homes during the building boom from 2004 to 2006, the Chinese drywall has been found to corrode coils, which frequently causes HVAC system failure. At least three lawsuits have been filed within Florida, including one that is seeking class action status.

It is still uncertain how many homes were built with the defective drywall, although the main concentration of complaints lies in South Florida.

SkyeTec’s Diagnostic and Industrial Hygiene Division can determine if the drywall is present in homes. Certified analysts document the existing condition of HVAC coils by performing a visual inspection of the attic and the HVAC system. The inspection typically takes less than an hour to perform and sampling and lab services are available if needed.
