Chris Uhland, chief executive officer of SkyeTec in Jacksonville, still chuckles when he recalls how that name came about.

Uhland and business partner Ted Nelson hired a public relations firm. The consultant said there were two approaches: pick something that refers directly to the industry in which the business operates, or use a one-word name that's catchy.

Uhland said he remembers thinking of the advice, "I paid money for that?"

Then out of the blue, Nelson's wife suggested, "What about SkyeTec?"

Skye is Nelson's daughter's name. It had connotations of blue skies, a nice image for a company that would do indoor air quality inspections. The "Tec" part ground the name in the actual act of doing inspections.

"As soon as she said it, we all looked at each other and agreed," Uhland said. "We knew that was the right name."

As it turned out, he said it's a good thing the name wasn't a literal reference to indoor air quality inspections because the company has branched out into many other lines of businesses the past 10 years.
