Local Pioneer in Disaster Safety Recognized by Federal Alliance
Jacksonville, FL -- A decade ago - long before the idea of private companies helping home owners protect themselves in advance of natural disasters became popular - Darius Grimes of SkyeTec was setting the pace. On Thursday, December 11 at 11 a.m., Grimes will be one of only a dozen Floridians recognized for his dedication to the disaster safety movement when he receives the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) 10-Year Legacy of Service award.
SkyeTec President Ted Nelson and FLASH CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson will lead a discussion about how the last decade has shaped behaviors – the quality of construction has risen, insurance companies are rewarding customers who make preventative changes – and how the next 10 years will require even greater change in order to keep insurance rates down.
“Disaster safety is an integral part of our business,” said Nelson, “and we are so proud that our Executive Director of Mitigation Services, who spearheads these efforts for us, is being acknowledged. We will work to make sure that our partnership with clients – and our partnership with FLASH – continues to grow throughout the next 10 years. It is the efforts of people like Darius through companies like ours that stands to save homeowners and business owners on their insurance premiums in the future.”
Grimes joined SkyeTec with more than 25 years of construction and mitigation experience under his belt. He has been a Certified Wind Mitigation Surveyor for five years and was one of the original FLASH Technical Advisory committee members who helped to craft the Blueprint for Safety recommendations that formed the basis of the My Safe Florida Home Mitigation Program.
“Darius Grimes is a proven champion and key player in the disaster safety movement,” said Chapman-Henderson. “He provides technical expertise to consumers, teaches classes for professionals and is a key player in the development of sound public policy. His successful efforts to reach out to experts across different industries and create consensus is helping our efforts to make America a more disaster resistant nation.”
Following the awards presentation, Nelson will unveil SkyeTec’s plans for an increased role in helping save homeowners, property management companies and property insurance companies money through an expansion of mitigation service offerings in 2009.
The event will take place at SkyeTec headquarters, 9570 Regency Square Blvd., Suite 410, Jacksonville, FL. Refreshments will be served and key executives from both FLASH and SkyeTec, including Grimes, will be available for comment.
